Dated 9.17.15.0.0 (5 Ahau 3 Muan) (785 AD) Throne 1was found within a niche in the Palace of Ruler 6, in Piedras Negras. This sculpted, painted and canopied throne represents the place where the last local Lord held official activities. The upper part of the throne is shaped as a gigantic Kawak Monster, lacking the inferior jaw, from whose eyes two characters emerge, perhaps the Lord's parents, who seem to be talking. The front and its supports bear glyphs describing relevant events in the life of Ruler 6, such as his birth and enthronement. Throne 1 of Piedras Negras is one of the valuable pieces housed at the National Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in Guatemala City. A detail of it appears on the cover of the luxurious hardback Maya Materpieces, a true collector's item...
