El Sombrero Ecolodge

Yaxhá Lagoon, Peten

In the departament of El Peten, in Northern Guatemala, a chain of lagoons, about 20 kilometers long (12 miles) stretches out from Peten Itzá Lake toward the East...

Yaxhá is one of these lagoons and it is found inside the largest protected area in Guatemala, the "Maya Biosphere" which includes the Tikal National Park and a series of smaller national parks and protected areas named Yaxhá, Nakún and Topoxté. These are also archeological sites located around or close to the Yaxhá Lagoon. Some of these sites are undergoing restoration and on-site research is being carried out. This enables our visitors to get a first hand glimpse of on-going archaeological work.

RELAXATION

"El Sombrero" is a small tourist development on the shores of the Yaxhá Lagoon. The constructions are rustic wooden ranches with thatched roofs and mosquito nets in windows and ceilings. Our nine rooms (doubles or triples) have a maximum capacity for twenty-three guests.

In the evenings solar energy, gas lamps and candles are used to provide light in accordance to the environment that surrounds the lodge. A big branch serves as a restaurant and library while smaller ranches house the bar, the bathrooms and the kitchen. Our restaurant serves both international and Guatemalan cuisine.

NATURE

Our guests, people with an adventurous spirit, are usually nature lovers or are interested in archaeology. They are in search of a peaceful habitat where they will find themselves surrounded by the exotic sounds and fragrances of the jungle. The rainforest around the lagoon will enable you to enjoy different types of vegetation and appreciate a wide variety of birds, butterflies and mammals. Ecolodge "El Sombrero" is the perfect place for those who wish to enjoy nature at its best in an unspoiled and authentic state.
